Design-Based Innovation to accelerate the capacity of City Hall.

human centered design in civic centers -

There are few incentives within bureaucracies to experiment and try new things—but there are plenty of motivations to maintain the status quo or settle for incremental change. The innovation team was created to provide cities with a method to address these barriers and deliver change more effectively. With a mindful approach, the innovation teams is able to create data driven solutions, greatly reducing the risks associated with civic work, and provide mayors with assurance in their ability to develop and implement effective solutions to their highest-priority problems.

These icons were developed to create a visual to the team’s process within development and execution. If there was any one thing that exemplifies the team and its mission, it is its process.


Long beach television -

I was asked by the team at Long Beach Television to help them out with updating there brand. I wanted to create something that would help unify it with the City of Long Beach brand while embracing the multi-media experience that LB TV offers. When speaking to the client, I wanted to establish a few brand values that were pertinent for the LB TV team to rally around.

Funded by a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Long Beach Innovation Team was designed to implement solutions that improve the lives of residents. This multi-disiplinary team helps strengthen and extends the City’s capacity to rapidly research and develop data-driven solutions.

As a Design Fellow for the City of Long Beach Innovation Team, I was responsible for leading and developing an intricate design thinking and research process to help the team implement innovative policy solutions to achieve a meaningful impact.

Design Thinking -

Design thinking is a series of steps that can help create meaningful solutions. The process isn’t linear but followed three main phases: Inspiration, Ideation, and Iteration.


Inspiration -

In this phase, the team and I did sociological research to help us better understand the city’s economic challenges. By observing people, their lives, process and goals, we are able have a holistic understanding on pain points that creates challenges.


Ideation -

During this phase, the team and I indulged in our research and observations to then identify insight and opportunities within our challenge and generate tons of ideas and refine and test our solutions.


Ideation -

This phase is where civic institutions typically fall short. During this phase we were able to bring our solutions to life. By incorporating key partners and assets, we were able to test, learn, follow and fine tune our solutions to maximize its impact.


Innovation Team Style Guide-

This branding guide was meant to unify visual communications among the teams internal and external partners. The intention of the guide was not to be definitive but to be seen as a fluid document that can change and adjust to the needs of the users.

As a brand, the team is balancing both The City of Long Beach and Bloomberg styles and paying homage to both. In order for the design to be at its most effective, they must clearly communicate information, the purpose of the information, and the target audience.
